“Be the kind of American worth fighting for,” Dustin Palmer advised attendees at the Lake County Veterans Memorial Service on Sunday. Palmer is the son of event organizers Brad and Rachele Palmer, and brother of Nick Palmer, who was killed in action in Iraq in 2006.
Three Rocky Mountain Renegades airplanes flew over Evergreen Cemetary as the national anthem played and Leadville/Lake County Fire-Rescue presented the colors.
Army Captain Alex Longo then played an original song in honor of the men and women who have lost their lives protecting the United States. “There’s a lot we could all be doing today, but what’s important is to honor the fallen,” Longo said.
Navy Seal Christopher Tidwell was featured as a guest speaker at the event. Tidwell spoke about Seals and others close to him who have lost their lives serving in the armed forces.
To Tidwell, the American flag’s colors represent different values. Blue is for vigilance and justice, red if for courage and sacrifice and white is for innocence, Tidwell said.
