In principle, the plugin fulfills its purpose: it checks content directly in the WordPress editor, flags errors according to WCAG 2.2, and offers a few automatic corrections. This is helpful for smaller websites or for taking the first steps toward accessibility.

However, the weaknesses quickly outweigh the benefits: automated checks only cover some of the requirements, such as those made mandatory by the European Accessibility Act. Problems such as incomprehensible or overly complex language or a lack of alternative text with relevant content remain undetected. This can easily create a false sense of security. In addition, the free version is very limited — features that would be indispensable for larger websites (bulk scanning, central error overviews, WooCommerce support) are only available in the Pro version. Overall, it is more of a tool for basic checks than a solution for a comprehensively accessible website.

Furthermore, I find the business practices of the company behind the plugin questionable. The first time you use the plugin, you are urged to sign up for the newsletter, which leaves an intrusive impression. It is also noticeable that users from the EU can sign up for the newsletter, but no information is provided about what happens to personal data – whether it is used exclusively for mailing or also for advertising by Equalize Digital or even sold to third parties. According to the GDPR, clear information about the purpose of data processing and the legal basis must be provided at the time of registration. The fact that this is missing is not acceptable from a legal point of view.

Anyone who takes accessibility seriously is likely to be disappointed by the agency behind the plugin. Equalize Digital regularly publishes accessibility reviews of WordPress products, the integration of which can also be checked with this plugin. However, the problem is that these posts are not updated – even when significant improvements have been pointed out on multiple occasions. This gives the impression that outdated information is deliberately left in place in order to further promote the agency’s own services (consulting and development for website accessibility).

As a person with a disability who is directly affected by barriers, I find this particularly disappointing. It gives me the impression that Equalize Digital is less interested in actual accessibility and more interested in attracting new customers. For me personally, this is a clear reason to stay away from this company in the future.
